James Garner is showing Manchester United there can be life after Paul Pogba in summer overhaul

Manchester United will head into the summer needing to address some already existing issues and solve new ones that may be caused by a number of departures, especially Paul Pogba.

Pogba has been a key player since his return from injury but it still seems safe to assume that he will look to leave the club in the summer when his contract expires, with a number of teams reportedly registering an interest in the World Cup-winning midfielder.

But even if United do look to replace the Frenchman in the summer with another signing, there is still another pressing issue with the team's midfield no, not another defensive midfielder piece, don't worry).

Pogba and Bruno Fernandes offer high-level passing when they are on the field, with the former being incredible at controlling the tempo of a game, but when United want to make a change, the options they have off the bench do not have the same amount of technical ability.

This sometimes leads to United losing control of the game despite the introduction of fresh legs and this can not continue if the Reds want to stop dropping points late in games.

James Garner may offer a solution, after once again impressing in Nottingham Forest's latest FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town.

He is not ready to be a starter for United week in and week out, but he could be the man that the manager turns to if they want to make a midfield change late in the game or even as rotation against weaker opposition.

During his loan spell with Forest, Garner has been a key player and it's not just his deadball delivery that has been catching United fans eye, though his ability to put in a corner is something that this current side is crying out for.

Garner has shown on many occasions that he can pick the ball up the ball in midfield with his back to the opposition, turn under pressure and then drive the ball forward either with a pass or a run.

This is something that United have struggled with in recent games as both Scott McTominay and Fred struggle to distribute the ball under pressure and a lot of moves end up stalling and being played back to David de Gea.

One clear thing United need to understand, however, is how Garner has evolved as a player at Forest and developed his game.

When he was sent on loan he was seen as a six who could do the defensive work and play in a defensive midfield pivot, but given his technical ability on the ball, he has been moved much further forward at the Championship side, which has benefitted him greatly.

He is not the big solution, but he offers United something they desperately need; technical ability and squad depth in a key position that will be exposed if Pogba moves on.
