James Garner insight is music to ears of Man Utd ahead of midfield refresh

James Garner's ears will have been burning in recent weeks.

The midfielder is tipped for big things at Manchester United and has been showing a glimpse of what he is capable of during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

Garner impressed last season at Forest and has returned to the City Ground this term, on a season-long arrangement.

Recent outings have seen him increase his output, as he adds goals and assists to his game.

In particular, his superb performance in the FA Cup humbling of Leicester City made many people really sit up and take notice of the 20-year-old.

Will Garner force his way into the United first team next season? Let us know in the comments

Indeed, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown said Garner's parent club should look at recalling him "quickly ".

Meanwhile ex-Manchester City man Trevor Sinclair even compared his dead-ball delivery to that of United legend David Beckham.

Now, Forest boss Steve Cooper has revealed the turning point in Garner's level of performances this season and highlights a particular Championship game where things clicked into place for the loanee.

“Jimmy has been a really strong performer for us, probably since he came on against Reading,” Cooper told the Nottingham Post.

“He came on in the Reading game away from home and had a really good impact, nearly scored and set up a great chance for Lewis Grabban.

“Since then, I think he’s found another level. What’s important for him - and we’ve spoken about this - is that he doesn’t drop any standards and continues to improve.

“The only way to do that is by continuing to perform well in the next game, and do even better.

“He’s in a good place, Jimmy. But he’s got to work even harder to, at minimum, stay where he is, but hopefully keep improving.

“He’s trained really well. He’s really caught the eye in training with his application and his attitude.

“He’s a winner, Jim. He’s a real winner. He wants to do well. He’s just got to keep it going. There’s a long way to go. You’re nowhere near calling it a full season yet - there’s a lot of football to be played.

“He’s got to keep his head down and keep going.”

Prior to his latest City Ground loan, Garner penned a contract extension at Old Trafford.

The deal lasts until June 2024 with the option of an additional year’s extension. After agreeing terms, Garner told United's website: "I’m made up, Manchester United has been a massive part of my life for over 10 years now.

"My ambitions are obviously to become a first-team player here. I know exactly what it takes, I’m ready to go and showcase my ability to everyone and keep on striving for all my goals.

“I want to be a big player for this club one day, that is my ultimate aim and I’ll be working every day to make that happen.”
