James Garner eyes Liverpool scalp as Jurgen Klopp gives Manchester United an Erik ten Hag hint

Your Manchester United morning headlines for Sunday, March 20.

Garner out to end Liverpool's quadruple hopes

When Liverpool secured their spot in this weekend's FA Cup quarter-finals, it signalled some time off for most of the Manchester United squad. But the responsibility of attempting to inflict misery on the Merseysiders on Sunday hasn't completely deserted their ranks.

United should have been heading to Anfield for a Premier League fixture this weekend, but that game has now been rearranged with Jurgen Klopp's side in FA Cup quarter-final action. Klopp has told United how to be a success under Ten Hag

The summer of 2022 promises to be the most important in United's recent history.

After believing that the big-money additions of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo last summer would turn them back into genuine Premier League title contenders, United are going to end the season trophyless once again and, potentially, without Champions League football secured for next season. The size of the challenge awaiting their next manager, therefore, is quite frankly enormous.

And all of the pointers suggest that the man tasked with overseeing that challenge could be Ajax boss Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman, as revealed by the Manchester Evening News, is the club's preferred candidate to succeed Ralf Rangnick, although Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino remains in the frame.

George Smith offers his thoughts.
