James Garner backed for Nottingham Forest 'opportunity' as Man United transfer decision looms

A return to Nottingham Forest could be a “great opportunity” for James Garner, amid uncertainty over his future at Manchester United.

The midfielder has made his first appearance of pre-season since returning to his parent club, coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes of a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in Australia. It was a first chance for new United boss Erik ten Hag to take a look at the 21-year-old, following two impressive loan spells at the City Ground.

However, it is unclear whether he has a part to play at Old Trafford for the upcoming season. And former United striker Andrew Cole believes he would be welcomed back by the Reds.

Speaking while on pundit duty for MUTV (via the Manchester Evening News), he said of Garner: "He was a big part of the team that got promoted there. If he doesn't force himself into this Manchester United squad, I think he will have another great opportunity to go to Nottingham Forest and play in that team.

"That is another year for experience and in the Premier League. He was such a big part with what he gave them last season and I think they will look to take him back there."

Injury problems had kept Garner out of action earlier on in United’s pre-season tour. It comes after he had been a regular for Steve Cooper’s side on their way to securing a place in the top-flight.

Forest are still keeping a close eye on the England Under-21 international’s situation. But they must wait for Ten Hag to decide if he fits into his own plans.

Speaking before the Villa game, the Dutchman told the Manchester Evening News: "James Garner integrated into training this week, so I haven't seen him. I don't have a full impression of him and I want to see more. I will then answer the question, and make conclusions and decisions.”
