Beloved actor James Earl Jones, who played some of Hollywood’s most iconic characters, has died at the age of 93.
According to Deadline, Jones passed away at his home in Dutchess County, New York on Monday morning US time — with a cause of death yet to be released.
Jones was perhaps most well known for lending his voice to Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King, but his voice-acting was just the cherry on top of an already impressive career across stage and screen.
In addition to clocking nearly 200 screen credits, Jones was one of just 21 people to win an EGOT — the acronym for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
He appeared in films such as Conan The Barbarian, Coming to America and The Sandlot, as well as countless TV shows including three episodes of The Simpsons.
In the final years of his nearly 70-year career, Jones rounded out an impressive filmography by reprising some of his most iconic characters in the 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and, finally, Coming 2 America in 2021.
In 2022, the Cort Theatre — where Jones made his Broadway debut — was officially renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in his honour, becoming the second Broadway venue to be named after a Black stage actor.
Jones was born in 1931 in Mississippi and raised in Michigan. He served in the US military before pursuing acting. He was married twice and had one son — Flynn Earl Jones.
