James Corden was fat-shamed by 'old man' Patrick Stewart in mortifying awards row

Last week James Corden got himself banned - and then unbanned - from a New York restaurant amid a row about eggs.

The Gavin and Stacey star gave a grovelling apology to Balthazar chain owner Keith McNally, 71, after he accused James of 'yelling like crazy' at a waiter.

Hitting out on Instagram, Keith claimed the waiter was 'left shaken' when James said he'd found traces of egg white in an egg yolk omelette and allegedly told the server, "You can't do your job! You can't do your job! Maybe I should go into the kitchen and cook the omelette myself!"

After the story broke, Mr McNally stood down and lifted the ban, claiming that James had been in touch and had 'apologised profusely'.

Further to that, last night James addressed the drama on his Late Late Show, admitting that while at first he didn't see that he'd done anything wrong, he now realises he was 'rude' and 'ungracious'.

He said: "Because I didn't shout or scream, I didn't get up out of my seat, I didn't call anyone names or use derogatory language, I've been walking around thinking that I haven't done anything wrong.

"But the truth is I have made a rude, rude comment. And it was wrong. It was an unnecessary comment, it was ungracious to the server."

It's not the first time James has found himself embroiled in a public clash.

James and Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart once shocked onlookers by getting involved in a jaw-dropping verbal tussle at an awards ceremony.

It all kicked off when James hosted the Glamour Women of the Year event in front of an audience of showbiz names including Cheryl Cole, Billie Piper, Christine Bleakley and Lily Allen when the spat took place.

The drama unfolded when theatre veteran Sir Patrick got up on stage to present a gong for Film Actress of the Year and criticised Corden's hosting techniques.

"I want to speak to James here, it is James isn't it?" he began, eliciting a laugh from the audience.

He then accused the comedy star of standing at the back of the stage with his hands in his pocket looking like 'he wished he could be anywhere but here' when winners came up to collect their gongs.

"Oh you couldn't be more wrong sir, you couldn't be more wrong," a clearly offended James hit back before he continued, "But when you come up and present an award, just f***ing get on with it."

Things took a turn for the worse when Sir Patrick got personal and proceeded to body-shame James, telling the comic: "From where I was sitting, I could see your belly. And that was from over there, at the back of the room."

With his arms folded, James leaned in front of Patrick's face and countered: "Sorry, I'm waiting for the punchline. Go on... You could see my belly... and we can all see you dying [on stage] right now. Let's go for it."

As the tension mounted, Sir Patrick retaliated, referencing one of James' earlier jokes about fancying heart-throb Nick Jonas.

"Do you want one more?" he continued to the astounded audience. "If you fancy one of the Jonas Brothers, cover your belly."

James then presented the gong to Avatar star Zoe Saldana, who said: "I like your belly."

Spurred on, James said, "I feel bad for people who haven't seen my belly," and lifted his T-shirt and showed off his tummy to huge applause before throwing one more barb.

"OK can we get a taxi ready please. The old man's going home," James sniped.

The pair appear to have patched things up in recent years, with Sir Patrick appearing on James' Late Late Show.
