James Corden 'overwhelmed' as fans rock up to glimpse filming of Gavin & Stacey final

James Corden has admitted he felt "overwhelmed" as Welsh fans flocked to the set of Gavin & Stacey to see the filming of its last ever episode.

The 46-year-old actor arrived on Barry Island, where the series is filmed, on Tuesday with the rest of the cast to shoot the upcoming Christmas special.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Corden who is also the show writer, said the turnout of fans, who he took time to pose for selfies with, was "lovely" and "wonderful".

"Were you expecting a turn-out like this?" he was asked, to which he responded: "I don't know really, we hadn't really thought about it. But it's lovely, it's wonderful.

"It's all overwhelming. The fact that this is the last time we'll probably be here, it's wonderful."

His co-star Ruth Jones, 57, also posed with a fish and chip shop worker in Barry Island.

On Monday, Corden confirmed work had commenced alongside a snap of his character Smithy's iconic blue volvo. He wrote: "Day 1. Here we go".

On Tuesday, September 3, he shared a photo of the backs of co-stars Joanna Page and Jones and captioned it: "Day 2. One last time on the island x".

On Tuesday morning it also appeared Jones’ character Nessa was enjoying a career change.

She was photographed giving a ride to a passenger in a pedicab, just a few doors down from where Nessa previously worked in an amusement arcade.

The word “Barrybados” could be seen on the side of the rickshaw. She was dressed in the character’s trademark black leather waistcoat as she carried two passengers along the promenade.

Fellow star Rob Brydon, 59, had also hinted shooting was underway, as he shared a selfie with co-star Jones on Saturday.

The beloved sitcom, written by actors Jones and James Corden, will return on Christmas Day this year.

In May, the TV star said that the script was done, revealing that they wrote it last year after he moved back to the UK following eight years hosting the Late, Late Show in Los Angeles.

However in July, Corden explained that they were still tweaking it during an appearance on Chris Evans Virgin Radio breakfast show.

Corden said: “We finished a script a while back and it was too long… rewrites are harder than any writing. “Rewriting is really difficult. Writing is really fun, because you can just go ‘anything can happen’.

The programme, which aired between 2007 and 2010, returned in 2019 for a festive episode that ended on a cliff-hanger with Nessa getting down on one knee to propose to Smithy, played by Corden.
