James Corden films dark comedy with two huge stars after success of Gavin and Stacey special

James Corden has returned to acting after the success of the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.

The chat show host, 46, was pictured shooting scenes with Sir Ian McKellen, 85, and Baby Reindeer star Jessica Gunning, 38, in London on Monday.

The trio are shooting the dark comedy, The Christophers, which is helmed by Ocean’s Eleven and Magic Mike director Steven Soderbergh.

Corden wore a checked hooded coat and glasses as he filmed alongside Gunning and McKellen, as well as I May Destroy You star Micaela Coel, in photos obtained by MailOnline.

The group were seen chatting and laughing between takes in an upmarket residential street on the sunny day out.

The Christophers focuses on “the estranged children of a once-famous artist who hire a forger to complete his unfinished works so they can be discovered and sold after his death,” according to Deadline.

The script is written by Ed Solomon, who worked with Soderbergh on the 2021 crime thriller No Sudden Move, Max miniseries Full Circle, HBO murder mystery Mosaic, and Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Gavin and Stacey was a huge hit with fans with its original 2007 to 2010 run.

It returned to screens in 2019 for a festive special and graced televisions once again with a Christmas Day episode in 2024, which raked in a staggering 20.6 million viewers.

Meanwhile, last month it was reported that Corden took on a surprising role in the secret West End phenomenon You Me Bum Bum Train.

This immersive production is “shrouded in secrecy”, with both its central London location and the show's unique contents kept tightly under wraps to ensure audiences are caught off guard.

The production relies entirely on volunteers, and a slew of famous stars have previously appeared in it for free.

Corden was first captivated by the show during its last run eight years ago and had been eager to get involved ever since, sources claimed.

An insider told The Sun: “James had been to see the show eight years ago when it was in London before so when he saw it was back he wanted to take in the madness himself.

“All actors in the play volunteer for free - regardless if you're an A-lister or have done little more than attended drama class at school.

“The whole thing is shrouded in secrecy and no one is meant to talk about what goes on but some of the biggest names in the world have taken part. Guests are said to have been shocked when confronted with James in one of the roles, but the rules of the show meant they couldn't address his appearance.”
