Jameis Winston talking with Colts, has offer from Saints

As the Deshaun Watson pursuit heats up and narrows down to just three teams, quarterback news for the New Orleans Saints sees no signs of slowing down. Per USA Today’s Josina Anderson, free agent signal-caller Jameis Winston has met with both the Colts and Saints and presently has an offer from New Orleans made earlier this offseason.

Having Winston on board to return in case Watson chooses either Carolina or Atlanta as his next destination would mean the Saints are in good shape. If they don’t land their big fish, Winston played very well in their system throwing 14 touchdown passes to only 3 interceptions before his season was cut short by an ACL injury. Winston’s familiarity with the offense, which maintains its continuity with offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, would be a large benefit to he and the team.

New Orleans has opened up nearly $30 million in cap space, which could be used to build around the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer with pass-catching options to complement the return of star receiver Michael Thomas. Thomas didn’t get to see the field with Winston last season, and one can only wonder the excitement the duo would generate. The Saints would also be able to avoid their season beginning without a quarterback if they moved forward with Winston, as Watson could face a lofty suspension regardless of their results of his civil and criminal sexual misconduct cases.
