Jake Paul to make fighter-pay announcement in response to UFC 270 purses

Jake Paul will announce his plan to improve fighter pay in MMA tomorrow after learning that the entire UFC 270 PPV card made just $1.8million (£1.3m).

World heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou made as little as 50 times less than his boxing counterpart Tyson Fury did for his last fight when he faced unbeaten interim champion Ciryl Gane last night in California.

And Paul was stunned to see the total payouts for the 11-fight card, which featured 22 fighters, saw the collective number come in at less than his last disclosed guarantee.

Paul's payout for his rematch with Tyron Woodley last month is not public knowledge, but their August bout saw both men paid $2m, more than the entire UFC 270 card.

And Fury made significantly more than that for his trilogy bout with Wilder, who also made over ten times the entire card's payouts.

The California State Athletic Commission released each fighter's guaranteed purse with the combined total being $1,844,000.

Paul quote-tweeted his response to the figures, saying: "I can’t stress enough how bad this is. My next step for helping with this situation will be announced tomorrow. PAY FIGHTERS MORE."

Paul's planned announcement will likely involve MMA veteran and legendary coach Antonio McKee, whose son is Bellator featherweight champion AJ.

McKee was introduced to Paul through the YouTuber's sparring partner Anthony Taylor, who has trained under the former fighter for his entire MMA career.

Speaking on The Mystic Hour podcast earlier this month, McKee said that he and Paul are working on a project that will benefit fighters.

"Unfortunately, I was treated really badly by the UFC after being undefeated for like eight years," McKee said.

"I was on an eight-year run where I was treated real bad but I was very fortunate and blessed to meet a guy like Jake Paul.

"He's saying and doing a lot of things that at first I thought was for the clout but then I realised was actually because he's about the fighter.

"There's something really big about to pop, I'm not going to say too much because I'm not supposed to but you're going to hear something big in the next week and Jake Paul is one of the people who made it happen."

Paul has taken pay cuts from his own fight purses in the past to facilitate paying his undercard competitors more.

He and Woodley were both paid a disclosed $2m for their fight in August, but Paul would have been entitled to a larger chunk of the deal had he not chosen to divvy out a portion of his payout to other fighters.

"It's coming out of my pockets for sure," Paul explained to Mirror Fighting back in August. "Like, directly out of my purse.

"Everyone on the card is getting the biggest pay-day that they've ever had as a fighter and that's just part of my movement.

"Look, these fighters deserve more and I want everyone to be excited and I want everyone to know that we as fighters should take care of each other."
