The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is active in Week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chargers announced Sunday. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Herbert will start the game.
Buy Jaguars TicketsHerbert, 24, suffered a rib cartilage fracture in a Week 2 loss, but managed to finish the remainder of that game. That, coupled with 10 days to recover, led most — including Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell — to believe Herbert would be prepared to play in Week 3.
But after participating in practice on a limited basis Wednesday and Thursday, serious doubts about his availability were raised Friday when Herbert sat out the Chargers’ last practice of the week while Daniel took first-team reps. Herbert was ruled questionable and told reporters that a decision would be made Sunday about his ability to play in the game.
On Sunday morning, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that the Chargers medical team were encouraging Herbert to consider his long-term health when making his decision about Game 3.
While Herbert wasn’t seen participating in warmups Sunday and Chase Daniel was even announced as the starter during the announcer’s dress rehearsal, he was listed as active by the team an hour and a half before kickoff.
