Suspended Jaguars safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. was moved to the NFL commissioner’s exempt list Thursday, opening his path toward a return to play after missing at least the first eight games of the 2024 season.
Gipson is allowed to practice with the Jaguars beginning Thursday, but not play until he is moved to Jacksonville’s active roster. His time on the commissioner’s exempt list expires Monday at 4 p.m. ET.
Gipson received a six-game suspension from the NFL in July for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. He signed with Jacksonville in August, reuniting with the Jaguars after playing for the club from 2016-18.
The 13th-year NFL safety traveled with the Jaguars to London for the final week of his suspension but was not cleared to return by the NFL as expected for Week 7 against the New England Patriots. He remained ineligible for Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers.
“It’s a league decision right now,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson explained Oct. 21. “It’s in their hands as far as the being released from the suspension. So, honestly, until we hear further, that’s where it’s at right now.”
Gipson has recorded 684 total tackles including 18 for loss, 2.5 sacks, 33 interceptions, 68 defended passes, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 173 career appearances, including 165 starts, with Cleveland, Jacksonville, Houston, Chicago and San Francisco.
He previously tallied 159 tackles including five for loss, six interceptions, 16 defended passes and one fumble recovery in 48 games with the Jaguars.
