Jaguars release S Tashaun Gipson Sr. from commissioner’s exempt list

The Jaguars released Tashaun Gipson Sr. from the NFL commissioner’s exempt list on Monday, opting against giving the formerly suspended safety a spot on their active roster.

Gipson, who reunited with Jacksonville in August, was suspended for the first six games of the campaign for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug protocols in July.

However, the NFL did not lift Gipson from its suspended list in Week 7 as originally anticipated, despite the league allowing Gipson to travel with the Jaguars to London in Week 6 for their two-week international series, per Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson.

“Unfortunately I kicked it back in the hotel room and I watched it there, and I had to shuttle to the airport,” Gipson described his experience n London, when the Jaguars faced the Chicago Bears in Week 6 and New England Patriots in Week 7, on Thursday.

“But I don’t miss a game. I’m dialed in every Sunday. And unfortunately, I can’t be on the sideline. That would have been a lot more nice to be able to rub elbows with these guys and tell them what I see. But you know, just being supportive in the best way I can.”

Gipson was moved to the NFL commissioner’s exempt list last Thursday, allowing him to practice with the team for the first time since the preseason. Jacksonville had until 4 p.m. ET Monday to move Gipson off the list, either onto its active roster or to release him.

A 13th-year pro, Gipson has recorded 684 total tackles with 18 for loss, 2.5 sacks, 33 interceptions, 68 defended passes and one forced fumble since signing with Cleveland as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming in 2012 and making the Browns’ 53-man roster.

Gipson logged 159 tackles including five for loss, six interceptions and 16 pass breakups during his first stint with the Jaguars, from 2016-18. He has since played for the Houston Texans, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.
