Jaguars re-sign backup quarterback C.J. Beathard

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed C.J. Beathard on Friday, less than three weeks before he was set to become a free agent. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, it’s a two-year extension for the Jaguars backup quarterback.

Beathard, 29, began his career with the San Francisco 49ers as a third-round draft pick and started 12 games over four seasons with the team. The Jaguars signed Beathard in March 2021, one month before selecting Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

In his two seasons with the Jaguars, Beathard has never started a game and has only thrown 13 total passes.

While Beathard didn’t contribute much on the field, he is unanimously considered to be the toughest to beat on the locker room ping-pong table.

The return of Beathard in 2023 sets up a battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Lawrence. In January, the Jaguars signed Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke after the former BC Lions quarterback reportedly made a tour of 12 interested NFL teams.

Jacksonville also had undrafted free agent E.J. Perry on the practice squad all season and kept him with a futures contract.
