Jaguars officially hire Liam Coen, Shad Khan weighs in on move

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made it official, announcing the hiring of Liam Coen as their next head coach.

Owner Shad Khan had this to say about the addition:

“To repeat my message earlier this week, I am deeply committed to building a winner here in Jacksonville,” said Khan.  I also believe in being judged by actions, not words.  That’s why I took swift and decisive action this week to hire Liam Coen as the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I am pumped that Liam is accepting the challenge and opportunity to build the winner that Jaguars fans and partners fully deserve,” added Khan. ” I know our players feel the same.”

The last 48 hours have been unprecedented in many respects to say the least.

After Coen initially dropped out of the running for the head coaching role to stay in Tampa Bay on a new deal that would make him among the highest-paid coordinators in football, the Jaguars’ moved on from GM Trent Baalke.

Khan then made another effort to restart conversations with Coen, who ended up taking a second interview on Thursday and from there, things moved very quickly, with reportedly, a hefty contract being a part of the equation.

During Coen’s first and only season as the Tampa Bay play-caller, Baker Mayfield had a career year, while the Bucs’ offense was the only unit in football to rank top-five in scoring, passing yards per game, and rushing yards per game.

At the top of Coen’s to-do list as the new Jaguars’ head coach will be maximizing Trevor Lawrence’s sky-high potential and getting this offense back on track.

It’s also been reported that Coen will play an important role in the Jaguars’ general manager search moving forward, with Khan emphasizing alignment between the two roles.
