Jaguars’ Devin Lloyd: After a loss like that, ‘you’re ready to get back to work’

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd has had to deal with the challenge of putting blowout victories in the rearview mirror and focusing on the week ahead. But he says forgetting about a frustrating result like the team’s 29-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles isn’t hard at all.

“Really, after a game like yesterday, you’re ready to get back to work,” Lloyd said. “After any game, but especially after you lose, you want to get over the film, watch it, and put it behind you and get back to a new week. It’s like a fresh start, so that’s what we’re looking forward to.”

The Jaguars jumped out to a 14-0 lead against the Eagles before giving up 29 consecutive points to a run-heavy Philadelphia offense. By the end of the game, the Eagles had 210 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on 50 carries.

It was a concerning day for a Jaguars defense that was previously looking stout against opposing run games. On the other hand, not many teams will present the challenges that a Jalen Hurts-led offense can offer.

“I would say the biggest thing was the fact that Jalen (Eagles QB Jalen Hurts) was such a threat running the ball, that now we had to account for him,” Lloyd said. “There was an extra guy to account for him pretty much for every play and every defensive snap. That was kind of the biggest adjustment.”

Lloyd, 24, was particularly susceptible to getting fooled by Hurts as he spent much of the day assigned to “spy” on the Eagles quarterback. It led to several plays where Lloyd was pulled out of position to make stops elsewhere.

The Jaguars face another dangerous rushing attack in Week 5 when the Houston Texans visit Jacksonville. Rookie running back Dameon Pierce already has 313 rushing yards — 10th most in the NFL — and two touchdowns through his first four games with the Texans.

Fortunately for Lloyd and the Jaguars, Texans quarterback Davis Mills doesn’t present as much of a rushing threat.
