Jaguars announce 5 team captains for 2023 season

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced five permanent captains for the 2023 season on Tuesday. A sixth captain will be chosen by Jaguars coaches on a weekly basis.

While there were some obvious choices, like quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the team didn’t pick the same five players it did in 2022.

Defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris is a first-time captain, replacing outside linebacker Josh Allen as one of the two defensive captains. Allen previously spent three straight seasons as a Jaguars captain.

Special teams ace Andrew Wingard also earned captainship for the first time, replacing long-time punter Logan Cooke.

Here are the five Jaguars captains in 2023:

QB Trevor Lawrence

It should come as a surprise to no one that Lawrence, the Jaguars’ franchise quarterback, is a team captain for the third time in as many NFL seasons.

Lawrence, 23, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft and bounced back from a tough rookie season to earn Pro Bowl honors in 2022 with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Expectations are sky high for Lawrence in 2023 and beyond, and Jaguars coaches have raved about the recent strides he’s made as a leader.

OL Brandon Scherff

Scherff was a two-time team captain during his career in Washington where he was a five-time Pro Bowler. The Jaguars signed him in the 2022 offseason hoping he could bring a veteran presence to a line lacking in experience.

While Scherff hasn’t played at a Pro Bowl level in Jacksonville, he’s been a leader and is a captain again.

After leading the NFL in tackles as a member of the Falcons in 2021, Oluokun joined the Jaguars as a free agent, earned captainship in his first season in Jacksonville, and then led the league in tackles again.

Oluokun, 28, has been a leader since the day he signed with the Jaguars and was an obvious choice to be a defensive captain again in 2023.

DL Roy Robertson-Harris

The former Bears defensive lineman joined the Jaguars as a free agent in 2021 and secured his future in Jacksonville this offseason with a three-year extension that’ll keep him in teal through the 2026 season.

During his time with the Jaguars, Robertson-Harris has emerged as a big personality and defensive leader. Off the field, he recently started the Inspiring Greatness Foundation and surprised fans earlier this year at a Dunkin’ Donuts as a way to raise money for Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

ST Andrew Wingard

Jaguars fans came to love Andrew “Dewey” Wingard during the 2022 due to his unbridled passion for all things Jacksonville Jaguars. He “would die for” Doug Pederson, he started the “It was always the Jags!” rallying cry, and he chose to come back in the offseason despite receiving interest from other squads.

Wingard’s non-stop enthusiasm has made him a perfect fit on special teams where he’s become a core member of Heath Farwell’s unit.
