"Obviously I’m a defender first and foremost, then I want to try and help the team create chances," Trent Alexander-Arnold said this week.
"For now the manager has decided I’m a right back. That’s where I’ll play. I’m really not fussed where I play. I just want to play football.
"If a manager decides to use me in midfield, or as a centre-back or a striker then that’s where I’ll play."
German legend Phillip Lahm made a late career switch from right-back to central-midfield under Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich and flourished while Fabinho spent his early years deployed as a full-back.
Alexander-Arnold’s eye for an assist and impressive passing range could well see him one day moved into an advanced role where he could well become the engine of a Liverpool team in five-years time.
EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool coach on Adrian's big change and high hopes for Caoimhin Kelleher HERE
But how would the team around him look?
With a plethora of names constantly linked, the unpredictability of incomings and outgoings plus a treasure chest of ability in the under-23s, we run the rule over Liverpool's potential 2024/25 squad.
Goalkeepers
Brazilian international Alisson would still take his place between the sticks and at 33 would bring a wealth of experience. He could well be operating at the peak of his powers at this point.
Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who will be 25, will possibly be banging on the manager’s door to be number one.
Defence
In front of Alisson comes potential Netherland’s international Sepp van den Berg who will be just 22-years-old.
He could form an all-Dutch centre-back partnership with Virgil van Dijk, who would act as a mentor to his younger partner. He will, however, have stern competition in the shape of Joe Gomez.
Joel Matip will be 33 but based on recent form will be aiming to remain at Anfield for the forseeable future.
Andrew Robertson’s gift for assists and leadership will surely see the Scot remain at left-back even if his pace has slowed a little at 30 while another Dutch prospect, the defensively versatile Ki-Jana Hoever, could operate either centrally or on the right of defence for additional options.
Yasser Larouci, after an impressive pre-season, might also be knocking on the door.
Midfield
Fabinho, at 30, will be a defensive midfielder still at the peak of his powers and he could sit at the base of a midfield that would feature the future captain, at 26, in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alongside Trent could be home-grown prospect Curtis Jones but Naby Keita, after an injury-hit start to life on Merseyside, will be hoping to be regularly showing his qualities by this point.
Jordan Henderson will be 34 and James Milner 38, meaning Liverpool could be looking to add further options to their ranks while Gini Wijnaldum, Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana are also in their mid-30s by this point.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, meanwhile, will surely be a vital member of the team.
Attack
Transfer talk has surrounded Jadon Sancho recently while Timo Werner has been long-linked with a move to Anfield.
Both would make astute transfers with the current front-three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane all entering their thirties during this period.
Harvey Elliott could be a regular starter if glimpses of his talent are anything to go by while Rhian Brewster will be hitting his prime at 25. Diivock Origi's recent long-term deal could also mean he remains a crucial member of the squad.
