Jadon Sancho makes ambitious Manchester United claim about Champions League hopes

Jadon Sancho has insisted Manchester United are good enough to win this season’s Champions League.

United have given themselves a good chance of making it through to the quarter-finals, having claimed a 1-1 draw at Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday.

Sancho started at the Wanda Metropolitano, having impressed recently for United, and although they certainly weren’t at their best, they managed to leave the tie in the balance thanks to Anthony Elanga’s equaliser.

Much of the focus for United this season will of course be on ensuring they finish in the top four, and secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

There is obviously another route to Europe’s top table should they win this season’s competition, although they are viewed as outsiders to add a fourth crown.

But Sancho insists United are capable of upsetting the odds and going all the way to Paris, and achieving their main goal this season.

“Definitely getting a Champions League spot for next season, 100 per cent we need to get that,” he told United’s website.

“I feel like we have a strong enough squad to win the Champions League, I really believe that.

“But we all have to work for each other and for us to even get close to the final we have to go game-by-game.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge, but I feel like with the players we have and the experience we have then it’s definitely doable. And for sure I will do my best.”

Attentions turn back to Premier League matters this weekend for United, with the return leg against Atletico still nearly three weeks away.

Before then, they continue their quest to finish in the top four as they take on Watford on Saturday, before kicking off March with a trip to the Etihad in the Manchester derby next weekend.
