Jada Pinkett Smith says it's time for healing as she breaks silence after Oscars slap

Jada Pinkett Smith said it was a time for healing as she broke her silence on husband Will's infamous Oscars slap.

Taking to Instagram today, she shared a meme which read: "This is a season for healing and I'm here for it."

The simple post didn't directly address the incident on Sunday night, although it does appear it's what she is referring to.

Will divided opinion after storming the stage at the Academy Awards and slapping comedian Chris Rock across the face.

Chris had made a joke about Jada's hair, telling her he was excited to see her in GI Jane, referencing how Demi Moore famously shaved her head for the role.

But Jada, who has alopecia, didn't see the funny side and looked to be upset about it as she rolled her eyes.

Chris insisted his joke had been a "nice one", but Will was clearly angry and headed to the stage before slapping a stunned Chris.

Some praised him for his actions, saying he was right to defend his wife's honour, while others said he should not have resorted to violence, and some even called for his award to be taken away from him.

Just moments after the slap, he was back on stage to collect the Best Actor gong for his role in King Richard, and he apologised to the Academy and his fellow nominees.

He's since issued a public apology to Chris, saying: "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.

"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."

He added: "I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world.

"I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.

"I am a work in progress. Sincerely, Will."

It comes after Will's mum broke her silence after she witnessed her famous son slapping comedian Chris on stage.

Carolyn Smith said she has never seen her son act the way he did when he slapped Chris across the face over a bald joke he made about the star's wife Jada.

She told 6abc: "He is a very even, people person. That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime... I've never seen him do that."

She was chatting to the Philadelphia news station about her famous son's first ever Oscars win and the controversial moment that came before it.
