Jacob Rees-Mogg has become the minister for "Brexit opportunities and government efficiency" as the prime minister reshuffles his cabinet.
The shake-up of the ministerial team follows the appointment of Steve Barclay as Boris Johnson's chief of staff and comes as the PM seeks to relaunch his administration following the partygate row.
Mr Rees-Mogg, the Conservative MP for North East Somerset, will become a full member of the cabinet.
He previously held the role of Leader of the House of Commons, which has now been given to former chief whip Mark Spencer.
In a statement, the UK government said: "The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of the Rt Hon Jacob Rees-Mogg MP to be a Minister of State (Minister for Brexit Opportunities and Government efficiency) in the Cabinet Office. He will be a member of the Cabinet."
The prime minister has come under increasing pressure to quit after the publication of a report by a senior civil servant into alleged breaches of lockdown rules in Whitehall.
In an "update" published last Monday, Sue Gray criticised "failures of leadership and judgement" across No 10 and the Cabinet Office.
A total of 12 gatherings are now being investigated by the Metropolitan Police.
