Jacob Rees-Mogg and young son heckled by protesters outside Parliament as Andrea Leadsom hits out at 'frightening abuse'

Jacob Rees-Mogg and his son were heckled by protesters as they left the Houses of Commons with a police escort.

Fellow politicians Andrea Leadsom and Michael Gove also had to have protection from officers as they left the building.

Ms Leadsom said she received "frightening" abuse from those taking part in the People's Vote march, which saw tens of thousands descend on Westminster to demand a second vote on Brexit.

Leader of the House of Commons, Mr Rees-Mogg, was joined by his eldest child Peter Theodore Alphege, who is around 10 years old.

People could be heard heckling the family as they made their way home along London's Millbank, with shouts of “traitor” and “shame on you”.

Similar insults were hurled at Business Secretary Mrs Leadsom.

Police could also be heard urging people to leave Mr Gove.

Ms Leadsom tweeted afterwards: “Thank goodness for our superb police. Just walked home safely from HoC with their protection - why do the so called ‘People’s Vote’ protesters think it’s ok to abuse, intimidate and scream in the face of someone they don’t agree with? So frightening, and so grateful to the police.”

Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott was also heckled with calls of “traitor” after speaking at the People’s Vote rally.
