Jacob Murphy sends message to Callum Wilson as 14-month Newcastle United wait ends

Jacob Murphy ended a 14-month drought in front of goal to help Newcastle United on their way to back-to-back wins in the Premier League on Saturday. The Magpies winger had the easiest of tap ins for the second goal of the afternoon as Brentford were brushed aside by five goals to one.

Callum Wilson reacted quickest to a loose pass from Brentford goalkeeper David Raya before unselfishly teeing up Murphy for his first goal since the opening day of last season. Murphy showed his appreciation after the game, posting a picture of himself and Wilson to Instagram with the caption: "Thank you bro, I owe you."

Murphy's last strike for Newcastle came against West Ham in August 2021 after a poor year in front of goal for the former Norwich winger. The 27-year-old has now started back-to-back games for Eddie Howe's side and admits he is relieved to have finally ended his frustrating run.

"It's been a while since I last scored so it's a lot of relief to see it hit the back of the net," Murphy told NUFC TV. "I must say a big shout out to Cal [Wilson], he's a ruthless goal scorer and he's in a cracking position, he saw me in a better position and rolled it on a plate for me. Credit goes to him for that.

"It's a difficult chance, you know it looks like an easy chance but it goes through his legs. I'm close to the goal and not really got much time to think about it, so clean contact and watch it go in the back of the net.

"I think there's more to come. Everyone in the dressing room knows what I'm capable of so it's about repeating that in training, in matches and keep going."
