'Jackpot!' - Dominik Szoboszlai reveals Liverpool plan after first meeting with club staff

Dominik Szoboszlai is targeting an immediate return to the Champions League at Liverpool after completing his £60m move from RB Leipzig.

And the Hungary captain insists he was not concerned about the Reds' Europa League status when they began negotiating with his representatives over a move last week as he insisted he has hit "the jackpot" by signing for Jurgen Klopp.

Szoboszlai officially completed his switch from the Bundesliga side on Sunday after signing a five-year contract following a medical at the club's AXA Training Centre. The attacking midfielder will wear the No.8 shirt vacated by Naby Keita who left at the end of the season.

In an interview with a selection of Hungarian media outlets on Tuesday evening, which was set up by his EM Sports representatives, Szoboszlai stated his intention to win the Europa League next term as he aims to inspire Liverpool back to the top table of continental football.

"I can accept that I won't be able to play in [the Champions League] for a year and the goal is to win the Europa League," he said. "Liverpool are competing in four competitions and I want to help them win as many of them as possible. When I heard there was a lot of interest, I didn't think about the Champions League.

"Rather, it is about winning the Europa League with Liverpool. My goal is to win titles. The more of them. In England, we will have four options next season. I've won something every year in my professional career so far, and I want to continue this streak and be part of that success, with anything – minutes played, goals, assists – that I can contribute.

"You have to work, that's the answer to everything, because sometimes in Leipzig they appointed a coach who didn't trust me, who believed in others more – I didn't despair, I trained for myself, for my future, and then a coach came along who already believed in me and gave me the opportunity to prove myself.

"It's been a tiring time and there's still work to be done, but of course I'm really excited. Now I have the opportunity to rest for a few days, return to Liverpool on the 10th and take part in the first training session with my new team the next day.

"Then we go to Singapore but I've already met with the team's strength coach, the physiotherapists and I've been given a separate training plan, I know what I need to do in the next few days.

"Obviously in training I will have the opportunity to show what I can do and if they find my kicking technique right, maybe I will have the opportunity to get behind the ball. But for me it's more important to get as many opportunities to play as possible and when I had the opportunity to talk to the head coach, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that it was up to me. Exactly what position they expect me to hold has not yet been discussed, it will be established.

"[To play for Klopp], for me this is the jackpot! I think he will bring out a side of my game that I don’t even know exists yet. I can’t wait. I always think day by day, weekend by weekend, game by game.

"I managed to move from Salzburg to Leipzig, which was a big step then. But I didn't think Liverpool would pay £60m for me. Especially not so soon. Also because I was injured in the first half of [my time at] Leipzig."

Szoboszlai added: "Then I started playing with Jesse Marsch. Then came a coach (Domenico Tedesco) who was less keen on me helping the team, he thought there were others who knew better. We accepted this outwardly, we didn't deal with it, but we continued to work twice.

"Then came Marco Rose, who had full confidence in me and gave me the opportunity - I worked hard to play in every game. So there have been ups and downs in my career at Leipzig. Thinking back, four years ago I didn't think I would be playing for Liverpool at the age of 22.

"Since I was little, I had a dream, which I turned into a goal over time, because I felt that it was achievable. And now I'm in one of the best teams in the world, one of, if not the best leagues in the world. This is what I dreamed of when I was little, and I was able to achieve it. This is also a great success for me, it took the help of many people. I was able to show that this can be done."

Szoboszlai has previously played at Anfield after taking part in a 4-3 win for the Reds over Red Bull Salzburg in a Champions League group game in October 2019 and he revealed it was the only stadium where nerves played their part in his pre-match routines.

"Indeed, Anfield is probably the only stadium where I was really nervous," Szoboszlai said. "I was still playing here as a Salzburg player and the night before the match was difficult, I thought a lot about what I had to do, what awaited me, how I would feel in this famous arena.

"It's a fantastic feeling that this is now my home ground and I'm also very happy to have become a role model for so many kids. I get a lot of messages, I know a lot of people are rooting for me, and I trust that a lot of little guys will do all the work I've done, they'll be able to do everything they can to make their dreams come true.

"Actually, I had to give up everything, but I don't regret that at all. I went to school just like other kids, but I was only interested in football. School, training, sleeping, school, matching, sleeping – that was my childhood. I don't know what it was like to be on the playground as a kid, what it's like to have a party with friends, class trips were skipped, but I worked, trained, and I'm happy to be here at 22."
