JackJumpers ban NBL fan over clapper throw

The Tasmania JackJumpers have issued a lifetime ban to a NBL fan who threw a hand clapper towards New Zealand Breakers players during a recent match.

The incident occurred late in the JackJumpers' heated eight-point loss to the Breakers on Friday night in Launceston.

An investigation by the club and the league, which included analysing video footage, found the clapper was "purposefully thrown" towards the opposition bench and team huddle.

The JackJumpers on Monday revoked the adult's membership and said they would also be prevented from becoming a member in future.

Tasmania CEO Simon Brookhouse said the supporter was very remorseful and embarrassed, and has accepted the ban without question.

Brookhouse said the club would not tolerate aggressive or unsportsmanlike behaviour, and the fan had breached membership terms and conditions.

"The JackJumpers have no hesitation in taking action in such circumstances as this behaviour is unacceptable at any level of sport and reflects poorly on the JackJumpers, the NBL and the wider Tasmanian basketball community," he said in a statement.

"It completely goes against our humble and inclusive values that are and have been so integral to the success of the club both on and off the court.

"We hope it can serve as a learning (experience) for all fans and we don't have to go through this process again."

The JackJumpers, who are 5-6 this season after making the grand final series in their debut competition, next play the Breakers in Hobart on Boxing Day.
