Jackass cast's lives from tragic deaths, X Factor romances and friendship fall-outs

Over a decade since Jackass 3D hit cinema screens, a fourth film from the prank-loving, life-risking comedy group is on it’s way for fans of the hit franchise.

Scheduled to be theatrically released in October 2021, Jackass 4 promises to be as controversial and as action packed as it’s predecessors, with stars Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O revealing that they were hospitalised throughout filming due to on-set injuries.

The production has already been marred with drama; with constant delays due to the coronavirus pandemic and original star Bam Margera revealing he had been fired from the forthcoming film due to failure to comply with mandatory rehab and drug testing.

Since the show’s initial airing on MTV in October 2000, the cast of the hit stunt series have become household names and icons to a generation of prank-loving viewers.

From penis-breaking backflips to the 'poo-cano', the controversial franchise has spent the last two decades pushing boundaries and leaving the world shocked with their stunts and antics.

We take a look at what the crew have been up to since they cannonballed to fame.

Johnny Knoxville

Undoubtedly the Jackass star who achieved the most mainstream success outside of the franchise, Johnny Knoxville is still best known as the co-creator and star of the reality stunt show.

Johnny, born Philip John Clapp, has starred in a number of Hollywood films since he first appeared on our television screens back in 2000.

As well as making cameos in movies such as Walking Tall and Men in Black II, the 50-year-old stuntman took on a lead role in 2005 film The Dukes of Hazzard, where it was rumoured he had an ‘emotional affair’ with his co-star, singer Jessica Simpson.

Now happily married to Naomi Nelson, the father-of-three has recently admitted that Jackass 4 will be his last contribution to the era-defining franchise.

“You can only take so many chances before something irreversible happens,” he revealed in an interview with GQ.

“I feel like I've been extremely lucky to take the chances I've taken and still be walking around.”

Throughout lockdown, the Hollywood entertainer revealed he had been dying his hair brown for over 20 years and claimed that a buzzcut from his wife saw him come to terms with his grey hair.

Steve-O

Responsible for some of the show's wildest stunts, Jackass star Steve-O is loved by fans across the world. (Getty Images)

London born Stephen Glover, better known as Steve-O, has rarely been off our screens since he became a fan favourite as Jackass' wildest performer.

The 46-year-old television personality shocked viewers with his jaw-dropping stunts throughout the show's series and subsequent movies.

From sticking fireworks up his bum to walking a tightrope over an alligator habitat, Steve-O is responsible for some of the most iconic scenes from the Jackass franchise.

Away from the camera, the comedian battled alcohol and drug addiction and mental health problems as he rose to fame.

In 2008, Steve-O' s friends, including co-star Johnny Knoxville, became concerned for his safety and the much-loved entertainer was admitted to hospital and placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold.

Later in the same year, the star avoided jail time for possession of cocaine on the condition he successfully completed a treatment program for his mental health and substance abuse issues.

Now 13 years sober, giving up drugs and booze hasn't taken away any of his charm and ability to entertain; with his first alcohol-free performance in a Jackass production being dubbed some of his best work.

There is no beer on set this time around even if some of us wish there was," Steve-O' s co-star Johnny Knoxville said at the time of filming 2010's Jackass 3D. "Everyone has had different injuries throughout which is a good sign and Steve-O is probably getting the best footage out of everybody.

"He is really going for it. He wants to prove to everyone he can do these stunts sober. It's been two years since he had a drink now. Everyone has been real supportive of him."

However, one lifestyle change that may impact his work on Jackass is the star's plant-based diet.

The show-stopping stuntman is now a vegan for both health and compassionate reasons and, after a Jackass 3D stunt involved a ram, he expressed concern for doing stunts in the future that "mess with animals."

Outside of work, the prankster performer is happily engaged to producer Lux Wright after previous relationships, including a long-distance romance with X Factor star Stacey Solomon back in 2015.

Ryan Dunn

Sadly, no future Jackass productions will feature Ryan Dunn as the much-loved stunt performer tragically passed away in 2011.

Born in Medina, Ohio, Ryan went on to move to Pennsylvania where he met his future prank-loving colleague Bam Margera at West Chester East High School.

The childhood pals of course went to become household names thanks to their dare-devil antics in the Jackass series and films.

In June 2011, at the height of his fame, the stuntman was killed in a drunk driving accident that also took the life of his passenger Zachary Hartwell, a production assistant on Jackass Number Two.

Hours before the tragic crash, Ryan had posted a photo to his Twitter account of himself and his colleague drinking in a West Chester bar.

Later that evening, an intoxicated Ryan would veer off the road and crash into a tree which resulted in his instant death aged just 34, as well as 29-year-old Zachary also losing his life.

Mourned by fans and friends alike, Ryan's death rocked the showbiz world.

Celebrities such as Tom Green, Dwayne Johnson, Tony Hawk and Sofia Coppola took to social media to express their grief for the entertainer, who was described as "the kind of guy who would do anything for a friend."

Rock band Kings of Leon paid homage to the Jackass legend at their London Hyde park concert by dedicated their song "McFearless" to the deceased star and the 2013 film Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is also dedicated to him.

Bam Margera

Originally set to appear in the fourth and final Jackass film, Bam Margera's battle with addiction has seen him removed from the production after failing to follow through with contract-mandated rehab.

Earlier this week, the original Jackass star took to his Instagram where he claimed co-star Johnny Knoxville and franchise director Jeff Tremaine “betrayed me, abandoned me, rejected me” and “strung me along like a f***ing puppet”.

Steve-O, who has battled drug addiction himself, publicly commented on the post saying: "Bam— the two people you’re saying wronged you (Knoxville and Tremaine) are the same two people who organised the intervention which saved my life.

"Everyone bent over backwards to get you in the movie, and all you had to do was not get loaded.

"You’ve continued to get loaded, it’s that simple. We all love you every bit as much as we all say we do, but nobody who really loves you can enable or encourage you to stay sick."

Since the social media fallout, Jeff Tremaine has had a temporary restraining order filed against the 41-year-old stuntman.

Speaking about Bam's battles, Johnny Knoxville recently said: “We want Bam to be happy and healthy and get the help he needs.. We tried to push that along. I think that's all I really want to say about it.”

The Viva La Bam star has been out of rehab for many years and it's believed the death of his co-star and childhood friend Ryan Dunn has affected him badly in recent years.

Chris Pontius

Known as 'Party Boy' to fans across the globe, Chris Pontius has been with the Jackass family from the very beginning and has gone on to co-host its spinoff Wildboyz with fellow stuntman Steve-O since the show was created.

Outside of the franchise, the father-of-one has also appeared on the big screen in movies such as Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and What We Do is Secret.

The stunt performer's was most recently spotted appearing as himself in the Netflix comedy Game Over, Man! in 2018

Wee-Man

Better known by his stage name Wee Man, Jason Acuña, has entertained Jackass fans with his stunts over the years; including antics such as staking as an Oompa-Loompa, doing deep-knee bends while holding basketball star Shaquille O'Neal on his back and dressing as a king while rolling Johnny Knoxville down a staircase in a red carpet.

Outside of the franchise, the Italian-born stuntman has appeared in reality TV series such as Armed and Famous, Celebrity Circus and MTV 's Scarred Live.

In 2018, the 48-year-old mixed his love of Mexican food with business as he opened a Chronic Tacos franchise in Long Beach, California.

Preston Lacy

Often starring in scene stealers with Jason "Wee Man" Acuña, Preston Lacy wasn't originally meant to appear on-screen in Jackass.

Initially a collaborator with Johnny Knoxville, the 51-year-old entertainer began his life with the Jackass franchise as a writer before Johnny convinced him to participate in stunts.

Outside of the world of pranks, Preston is know for his stand-up comedy and performs as festivals, clubs and bars across America.

Dave England

While carrying out the wild stunts performed on Jackass isn't without risk, it was actually Dave England's other career pursuits that left him with a life-changing injury.

Speaking to Jon Stewart, Johnny Knoxville revealed that Dave was left with just one testicle after a snowboarding accident in 1997.

If anyone doubted the Jackass creator's claims, Dave proved this to be true when, in a scene from Jackass Number Two, the snowboarder attached a leech to his scrotum.

Outside of starring in some of the show's most stomach churning stunts, the 51-year-old is a committed vegetarian and is happily married to Shawna England, the mother of two of his four children.

Ehren McGhehey

Like his co-star Dave England, Ehren McGhehey also worked as a professional snowboarder before finding fame with Jackass.

After a broken neck saw him retire from the slopes, 'Danger Ehren' joined his stunt loving colleagues in racking up plenty on injuries throughout his time on Jackass - most notably frequently losing his teeth.

Outside of the franchise, Ehren has also appeared on MTV' s Ridiculousness with his co-stars Wee Man and Preston Lacy.

In 2016, he kick started his acting career with an appearance on the police procedural drama, Grimm.
