Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere had admitted he is gutted not to be able to see Raphinha in an Arsenal shirt as the Gunners fall behind in the race for the winger. Mikel Arteta’s side had fancied themselves as favourites following Barcelona’s financial problems, but swift action from Chelsea and a return to the race from the Spanish side have killed hopes of an Emirates arrival.
Both Chelsea and Barcelona can offer something Arsenal cannot, however. The Gunners’ poor form towards the end of last season saw them pipped to the final Champions League place by rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Their failure to qualify for the competition has hampered Arsenal’s chances at signing Raphinha, and former player Wilshere admitted he is gutted.
"I am [gutted]. I can definitely see the Barca one for a Brazilian.” Wilshere told talkSPORT.
"Neymar played there, Ronaldinho. I would love him to come to Arsenal because I think he's a great player. Unfortunately it doesn't look like he will."
Co-host Darren Bent mirrored Wilshere’s feelings, but cited Champions League football as one of the major deciding factors in a move.
Bent said: "I can understand why everyone wants to play for Barca or Real Madrid. But gutted that he's not going to come to Arsenal but can fully understand why he'd want to go to Chelsea or Barcelona, two clubs that are in the Champions League."
The Blues - backed by new owner Todd Boehly - acted decisively with a £60million bid earlier in the week, but they are coming up against a Deco-shaped brick wall when trying to negotiate personal terms. Raphinha has made clear his dream is to move to the Camp Nou and his agent is reportedly stalling talks with the London club in the hope that Barca can find the money.
The Blaugrana have been in discussions with Leeds and have reportedly offered to match Chelsea’s bid but with the money to be paid in instalments over a number of years. The Whites’ nerve will be tested in the coming days as Barca and Deco attempt to apply pressure on a move to the Camp Nou, even if it means a poorer deal for the club.
