Jack Iredale sends Cambridge United farewell message amid Bolton Wanderers transfer link

Cambridge United defender Jack Iredale has described his spell at the U's as the most enjoyable time of his career so far after he turned down a fresh contract offer amid a transfer link to Bolton Wanderers.

The 26-year-old was offered a fresh deal by the U's which Cambridge boss Mark Bonner previously said had been on the table for 'months' and expected Iredale to depart.

And it has now been confirmed the defender has now turned down that offer and is poised to leave the Abbey Stadium this summer.

Wanderers were last month reported to be among a few sides said to be interested in the defender, including Wigan Athletic and Preston North End.

The left-back was played out of position at times this season, at centre-back and as a holding midfielder, and has drawn high praise for his performances.

Wanderers have gaps to fill in the left-back and central defensive departments after it was confirmed that Alex Baptiste and Liam Gordon would be among several players released by the club this summer.

Iredale played a total of 89 games for the club after joining from Carlisle United in 2020 and was part of the team which won promotion to League One in the 2020/21 campaign.

The player has now taken to Twitter to bid farewell to Bonner's side and said the club will always have a 'special place' in his heart.

Taking to Twitter, Iredale wrote: "To the fans, my teammates, the coaching staff and everyone else associated at the club - Thank you for an incredible 2 years.

"The most enjoyable period of my career to date with the biggest moments of my career so far. this club will always have a special place in my heart."
