Scotland star Jack Hendry has warned his club boss Alfred Schreuder he won’t allow him to wreck his World Cup dream.
The Club Brugge defender scored Scotland ’s opener in their 2-2 draw with Austria in his first game in five weeks after being left on the bench for the Belgian outfit for the last seven matches – and getting a total of 38 minutes game time.
That situation has infuriated the 26-year-old, who joined from Oostende last year in a £5million deal, as he insists he is the best defender at the club and deserves to be in the team.
Hendry was sent off twice in the new boss Schreuder’s first few games in the Brugge dugout and has paid the price.
But the former Celtic stopper is adamant that if the situation doesn’t change, he’ll be considering his future in the summer.
Hendry said: “We changed managers and he has been extremely harsh on me.
“I should be in the side and I certainly didn’t go to Club Brugge to sit on the bench.
“That has got to resolve itself fairly quickly.
“We will see what happens when I go back, but it needs to change.
“I didn’t go there to sit on the bench and I had a fantastic start to the season.
“I played in the Champions League games, six out of six, and it was unbelievable.
“I was in a really good place.
“These things happen when football managers come in.
“I got two red cards but the treatment of me has probably been over the top.
“For me, I am now going back and will hopefully get back in the side fairly quickly.”
Hendry insists he is the best defender at his club and is adamant he has the support of the Brugge dressing room and fanbase - but Schreuder, who was Ronald Koeman’s No 2 at Barcelona, doesn’t seem convinced.
The Scot added: “There is a lot of noise at the club that I should be back in the team, but when it’s one person’s opinion...
“Hopefully it changes quickly and as I touched on, it needs to change.
“That is so important between now and the end of the season.
“I want to be part of the Club Brugge team. I signed for Champions League football, but also to be part of a team that wins the league.
“I have played around 40 games this season and that’s been good for myself.
“But I want to play in the last eight to ten games and try to win the league too.
“I should be playing. A lot of people at the club think I should be playing.
“But hopefully the manager gets that opinion fairly quickly, as I need to be playing.
“I got the two red cards but they were the first of my career, and sometimes that happens.
“But even if these things happen, I think you still keep your best defender in the team.
“The manager has gone against that. Hopefully he changes that opinion fairly quickly.
“I shouldn’t be out of the side. A lot of people agree with that within the football club.
“But the main opinion is the manager’s and he makes the decision.”
While Hendry is furious with his club boss, he couldn’t be happier with his international manager Steve Clarke and thanked him for keeping faith in him.
He said: “The gaffer has been brilliant with me. He has put a lot of trust and faith in me.
“Each time I represent Scotland on the pitch, I try to repay that.
“I will be working extremely hard at club level to get back playing and he knows that.
“I will do everything I possibly can to get in that squad for June.”
