Jack Butland earns Rangers defence as transfer exit call 'big overreaction'

Jack Butland has come under criticism over Rangers mistakes in recent weeks - but calls for a transfer exit in the summer would be a "big overreaction" according to Cammy Bell.

The former Rangers goalkeeper reckons the issues with performances at Rangers go far beyond "minor mistakes" from Butland.

Butland suffered a blunder against Dundee at the weekend but Rangers rallied to claim a last-gasp 4-3 win at Dens Park.

For Bell, Barry Ferguson has far bigger problems to address at Rangers before any drastic action should be considered over the goalkeeping position.

The pundit admits Butland is experiencing a "tough spell" but cited terrific displays against Fenerbahce and Celtic as he defended the shot-stopper.

He told the Daily Record: “I’ve seen some suggesting Butland should be moved on this summer but that would be a big overreaction for me. Jack isn’t making mistakes week in, week out. It’s more minor mistakes.

“Yes he got away with one at the weekend because the team won the game. But you also saw the part he played against Fenerbahce and at Celtic Park making big saves in vital matches. And I have no doubt he'll have a big part to play in how Rangers' European season pans out.

“He’s going through a tough spell at this moment. But whatever issues Rangers have, they go beyond Jack Butland.

“Barry Ferguson has himself touched on it since he's been in there — the team is a long way short of where he expects a Rangers team to be."
