Jack and Emily most popular names for babies in Dublin last year

Jack and Emily were the most popular names for babies chosen by parents in Dublin in 2022.

According to figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Jack remains the most popular boy's name in all areas of the country. In Dublin City, Jack was the most popular for boys while Emily was chosen for girls.

In Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Olivia was the most popular girl's name in 2022 while Jack was most popular for a baby boy. In south Dublin, the top three names for baby girls were Ellie, Emily and Lily and for a boy it was Jack, and in Fingal parent's top choice in name for girls was Olivia, and the top names for a boy was Jack and Noah.

Jack has been the most popular name for boys since 2017, but Emily has displaced Fiadh which in 2021 was the most popular name for baby girls which is a jump from two spots. Data from the Central Statistics Office shows Noah, James, Rían and Charlie were the other most poplar names for boys, and Grace, Fiadh, Sophie and Lily made up the remainder of the top five for girls.

Jack and James have been in the top five boys' names since 1998 and both have maintained their position at first and third respectively. Noah remains in the top five in 2022, maintaining its position at 2nd. Rían was a new entrant to the top five in 2021 and rises one place to 4th in 2022, with Charlie in the top five for the first time in 5th place.

Emily was the most chosen girls' name or joint-first in five areas including South Dublin. Grace was the second most popular name nationally but was the top girls' name in Ulster.

Looking back 50 years ago to 1972, Mary was the top girl's name and John was the most common boy's name. As is usually the case, the figures showed a wider variety for girls' names (4,966 recorded names in 2022) compared to boys' names (4,016).
