The Osprey have stopped Wales international Jac Morgan from falling into the clutches of English or French clubs willing to pay a king’s ransom for his services.
In news coach Toby Booth hailed as positive for the team’s fanbase and for Welsh rugby as a whole, the 23-year-old back rower has signed a new contract to stay with the south-west Wales region.
The Ospreys were desperate to hold onto the nine-cap player, all the more so after the recent losses of Joe Hawkins and Ethan Roots to Exeter Chiefs.
With his skill at the breakdown, tackling ability and strength as a carrier, plus his maturity and leadership qualities, Morgan reportedly had any number of would-be suitors but has rebuffed them all to remain in Wales. His action is a major plus for the regional scene at a time of huge turbulence for the Welsh game, with tighter budgets being introduced, bringing with them potential pay cuts and job losses.
“I’ve really enjoyed playing for the Ospreys and I’m delighted to be extending my contract with them,” said the youngster who arrived at the Swansea.com Stadium region from the Scarlets in 2021 and has since made 26 appearances for Booth’s side, going from strength to strength as a player.
“I feel I’ve developed as a player during my time here and I’m excited to see what we can achieve as a team in the future. As a squad, we have a great balance of experienced players and exciting, young talent. From the coaching staff to the players, everyone here is challenging themselves to be the best they can be. The setup is geared for success.”
Moving away from regional rugby would have meant Morgan abandoning his Wales hopes under the eligibility rule that requires capped players playing outside the country to have made 25 Test appearances to continue playing for Wales. But it hasn’t come to that and Warren Gatland will be grateful.
Booth is beyond pleased, as well, to have retained one of the players the Ospreys believe they can build a side around in the coming years.
“Jac personifies what we look for in a player,” said the Ospreys team boss. “For his age, he is a highly influential player on the pitch.
“Since signing, he has taken every opportunity we have given him. His attitude coupled with his ability have allowed him to excel for the Ospreys. We’re looking forward to seeing him progress and grow with the team.
“With everything that’s gone on in the last few months, it’s great to announce some real positive news for the Ospreys fanbase and for Welsh rugby as a whole.”
