Manchester United hero Jaap Stam has backed Jurrien Timber to succeed at Arsenal ahead of his official transfer announcement.
The Gunners have agreed a deal with Ajax to sign the talented defender for an initial £34.2million with a further £4.3million in add ons, football.london understands. Timber's versatility means he will be able to slot in at right centre-back or right-back for Mikel Arteta's side, with the 22-year-old possessing all the attributes to become a success under the Spaniard's tutelage, according to Stam.
"He’s a very good player that we all like in Holland," the Dutch legend told charleswatts.football. "So for him, making that step to Arsenal is a very positive one.
"And when I look at Arsenal, I see a team where all the players are very comfortable and very dominant on the ball as well so I think he can be very successful in doing that for them." Ajax endured a difficult 2022/23 campaign, finishing third in the Eredivisie and missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification as a result.
Despite the team's struggles, Stam has claimed that Timber's quality continued to stand out. "We all know the ability he has on the ball," he added.
"At Ajax we can all talk about his performances last season, but he was still one of the best players. He was almost the only one who took the initiative, who showed quality.

"The other players all found it very difficult to show their ability and that’s why for him it’s good to make this step because the players around him at Arsenal are much better, will show more quality and take up better positions in small areas so he can be more decisive with his passing. He’s shown when he plays with better players around him that he can be an exceptional player."
Stam isn't the only Dutch footballing hero that rates Timber highly. In fact, Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has previously made it no secret of his admiration for the young defender too.
"I wasn’t nearly as far along as he is now [at the same age]," Van Dijk said when asked about his compatriot last year. "I have nothing but praise for him.
"He is a great player and a true professional. He has so much potential.
"Hopefully he can develop further. Then it will be all right, I think."
