J.J. Watt became a household name among NFL fans during his 12-year career.
The newly retired defensive end built his reputation as one of the league’s most effective edge rushers during his 10 seasons with the Texans before playing his final two with the Cardinals. As the three-time Defensive Player of the Year prepares for his induction into Houston’s Ring of Honor in October, many have wondered if Watt might sign a ceremonial one-day contract to retire with the franchise.
Watt made his feelings on the subject abundantly clear Tuesday. He told reporters he did not “see the reason” to sign a ceremonial pact with the Texans.
“I don’t really feel the need to sign a one-day contract or anything,” Watt said, per Drew Dougherty of Texans TV. “It’s more just a ceremonial piece of paper. I think that the Ring of Honor and all that that comes with it is more than enough. I think they’ve done it first class the whole way, and I appreciate that. I haven’t even filled out or done any retirement papers.”
Watt’s Ring of Honor of ceremony will take place on Oct. 1 when the Texans face the Steelers at NRG Stadium.
Watt, who posted a franchise-record 101 sacks in Houston, will become the third person to earn the honor, following former wide receiver Andre Johnson and the franchise’s late owner, Robert C. McNair.
