Training camp is always going to have moments that get picked up on social media and run with. Rookies, especially, can get carried away as teams and media look to back up their draft claims.
So far in camp, the clips we have seen of J.J. McCarthy are seemingly getting backed up by those are watching in person.
Fans are one thing to impress, but when national media makes a stop at camp, they are harder to get over. Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame saw enough from the former Michigan quarterback to give him his flowers.
During a two-minute drill to end the practice for the day, McCarthy was paired with the second-team offense and made some magic happen.
“. . .with bad weather approaching, but it was consistent with McCarthy’s day. He was largely on-time and accurate, and showed more than enough arm strength.”
Those are the types of plays that McCarthy can show to build on and get more strung together he could be starting against the Giants in Week 1. Even if he doesn’t, it seems McCarthy is making the leash that Sam Darnold is on as the starter even shorter.
