Ivan Toney set for final England World Cup audition as Brentford face Gillingham

Fighting for position: Ivan Toney hopes to make England’s World Cup squad this week

Ivan Toney will start for Brentford against Gillingham in the Carabao Cup tonight as he “fights for his position” in the England squad for the World Cup.

The striker faces a nervous wait to learn whether an FA investigation into an alleged betting ban breach will cost him a place in Qatar.

It emerged over the weekend that Toney is subject to an ongoing inquiry as Gareth Southgate prepares to name his 26-man squad on Thursday.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the investigation relates to a period more than two years ago before he joined Brentford and did not involve betting on his own team to lose.

Toney released a statement on Saturday confirming he was helping the FA with its investigation and saying it was a “childhood dream” to represent England at a World Cup.

He was suspended for Brentford’s 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest on Saturday but he will return to the team against Gillingham.

Bees manager Thomas Frank said: “Ivan will start the game. He is fighting for his position in the World Cup squad.

“Of course, he is hoping to be called up. I have spoken many times, I think he will be a perfect fit for two reasons… one, his qualities and, two, his specialist role, both as a striker coming off the bench and hopefully making a difference if they need a goal in their game. And, of course, with the penalties as well.”
