Ivan Toney England axe may benefit Callum Wilson as Newcastle trio dream of World Cup

Gareth Southgate has some tough decisions to make as he narrows down his England squad ahead of the World Cup, with a Newcastle United trio still hopeful of making the plane to Qatar.

Southgate is set to name his provisional squad for the tournament on Wednesday 19th October, which is 33 days before kick-off in Qatar. With the final 26-man squad needing to be submitted to FIFA by Sunday 13th November, there is still time to earn - and lose - those seats on the plane, with some huge talking points across the board during the international break.

As for Newcastle, Nick Pope could get a chance to shine against Italy and Germany in the Nations League this week with Jordan Pickford out injured. The shot-stopper has been in superb form since his summer move from Burnley, and is competing with Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson for the No 1 jersey in Pickford's absence.

Kieran Tripper is surely a nailed-on certainty for the World Cup squad. The full-back can operate on either side, is trusted by Southgate and has big-game experience - it's not just the Magpies who have seen his free-kick prowess, as England fans will remember fondly his goal in the semi-final at the last World Cup. But with tough competition in the full-back areas from the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Reece James, it's not a given he will be included.

One last Toon player still harbouring hopes of a call-up is Callum Wilson. The striker has had his injury issues but when fit is as good an option as a back-up to Harry Kane as there is. Ex-Newcastle forward Ivan Toney has been left out of the squad to face Italy - is there still time for Wilson?
