Ivan Toney could be available to play for Brentford against Liverpool on Monday evening, with the Bees left breathing a huge sigh of relief over his fitness.

The Premier League’s third-top scorer picked up where he left off before the World Cup break by netting for Thomas Frank’s confident side in their 2-2 Boxing Day draw with Tottenham and again in Friday’s satisfying 2-0 London derby victory over West Ham.

However, Brentford were given significant cause for concern over the condition of their prized asset after he was stretchered off late on at the London Stadium with what manager Frank described afterwards as a “worrying” knee problem.

It appeared the Bees would face an anxious wait as Toney underwent further assessment over the weekend, but they have now been offered a massive boost with Frank himself confirming that the issue is not serious.

The England striker could even feature as soon as mid-table Brentford make a swift return to top-flight action at home to Liverpool on Monday, before another clash with West Ham looms in the third round of the FA Cup next Saturday.

“It’s good news with Ivan,” Frank said on Sunday. “It’s not a significant injury. He could potentially be available for tomorrow.

“There’s nothing wrong with his knee. Without going too much into the details, it’s something with the muscle.

“The physios explained the details and I completely forgot! I’m just glad it isn’t serious.”
