Ivan Toney blasts Brentford after ‘embarrassing’ Aston Villa loss: ‘Shambles... we were like a bunch of kids’

Embarrassed: Ivan Toney did not hold back in his criticism of Brentford’s performance at Villa Park on Sunday

Brentford striker Ivan Toney blasted his team-mates after their 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa yesterday and said the “embarrassing performance” was a “shambles”.

The Bees were 3-0 down inside 15 minutes at Villa Park as the home side started life without Steven Gerrard with an emphatic win.

Toney did not hold back in his assessment of the Brentford display and said they played “like a bunch of kids”.

"Shambles, to be honest,” said the striker. “Shambles.

"They fully deserved the result and it could have been more. We were like a bunch of kids out there. I don't mind losing games but not like that. Embarrassing performance from the boys.

“We knew what they were about, we knew they had quality throughout the team. They put in a performance today and deserved to win.

"15 minutes in, 3-0 down. That cannot happen in a Premier League game. We had it against Newcastle and we bounced back so hopefully we can do that again.”

Toney insisted Brentford needed to be “tough and nasty sometimes” in order to compete.

“It’s a tough one to take,” he said. “We deserved to lose; you can’t put in a performance like that.

“To be 3-0 down in 15 minutes gave us a mountain to climb. We knew they were going to start fast, but we just didn’t start fast ourselves and got punished.

“One goal would have changed it [after half-time], but you’ve got to get the goal and we didn’t do that. Their fourth put the game to bed.

“You’ve got to be tough and nasty sometimes and we didn’t really do that. I just feel sorry for the fans who travelled here and saw a defeat like that.”
