Vera fans worldwide are sharing their admiration for the North East’s favourite detective despite her brazen approach to parking laws.
The character, played by Academy Award nominee Brenda Blethyn, is known for her iconic rain mac and fisherman’s hat costume. She’s also never far from her trusty Land Rover motor.
Whether she’s cruising along the picturesque Northumberland coast or investigating a murder scene, every fan of the show will recognise the vehicle. Further, they’ll recognise the detective’s no-nonsense approach to getting the job done quickly.

Fans love how Vera will drive wherever she wants and parks wherever she likes. Fans on Reddit absolutely love what they call Vera’s “boss move”.
“I love how she parks wherever she wants,” says one fan. “Whether it’s the middle of the street, sideways, in front of a business, just wherever. She’s Vera, she’s the boss”.
Another added “It’s such a boss move that Vera parks wherever she wants. Who’s going to give her a parking ticket?”
For some, Vera’s bold actions are all part of who she is. Upon reading the ninth book from Ann Cleeves, one fan observed: “I wasn't sure what to make of DCI Vera Stanhope abandoning her car at the start of The Darkest Evening — bit odd for a cop, even in snow — but having seen the TV series, her disregard for petty traffic law in pursuit of criminals might be an essential part of the character. #Vera”
Able to forgive her misdemeanour, they added: “I don't tend to care for police solving crimes, give me an amateur any day, but she's got that classic shabby, rougher edge to her (like Columbo, I suppose) that's really endearing.”
Other fans had noticed her nonchalant approach to car safety. Julia on Twitter worried: “I wish Vera would lock her Land Rover...it’s going to get nicked one of these days!”
Another acknowledged that she can “always park in front of wherever the suspect, witness or victim lives and never locks the car door no matter how dodgy the area is”. They added, “She even leaves her Land Rover’s windows open!”
However, not everyone was impressed with the DCI’s driving and parking skills. One fan complained: “Oy @itvvera, why was Vera parking in a blue badge bay outside the prison?”
Another said: “Not a good advert for Vera’s police. She parked in a disabled bay at the prison.”
