ITV This Morning viewers unhappy as Rishi Sunak quizzed on McDonald's rather than leadership contest

Rishi Sunak appeared on ITV's This Morning show on Thursday, August 18, but rather than discussing the big issues of the leadership contest, described, in detail, his ordering habits from fast food chain McDonald's. Interviewers Rochell Humes and Andi Peters have been slammed for the morning segment.

The Conservative party leadership election has been whittled down to two candidates - Rishi Sunak and foreign secretary Liz Truss. The battle for the title of the next PM and what candidates will do for the country should have been the topic of conversation for the former Chancellor, according to viewers but the interview took an unexpected turn.

Following questions about the energy crisis, and Liz Truss's recent 'lazy' British workers comment, talk surprisingly turned to Sunak's trip to a popular restaurant and what he had ordered there. The question was prompted by an image shared on his Instagram story using contactless payment method to buy a McDonald's breakfast. The line of questioning confused and angered some viewers.

During the interview Sunak explained: "I was there at about 7.45am in the morning, it was not a burger, I got breakfast." Adding: "A bacon roll with ketchup and pancakes. If I’m with my daughters we get the wraps. Wraps with the hash brown and everything."

Taking to social media following the morning interview, one viewer wrote on Twitter: "I wasn't interested at all on what he had in McDonald's or his favourite food there (some would say lucky he could afford it!!) Many many questions not asked!"

Another wrote: "Why are @thismorning giving @RishiSunak such a warm and fuzzy interview when the country is falling apart? I honestly couldn't care less about what Mcdonald's meal he pretends to like. #CostOfLivingCrisis #energybills #ofgem #ToryLeadershipContest #ThisMorning".

The comments continued with one person added: "Ask him the questions us normal people would ask, put yourself in the shoes of a low paid worker and you might ask the proper questions", and another saying: "Waste of space, no one cares about McDonald's we care we can’t heat or eat this winter".
