ITV This Morning: Viewers slam 'ridiculous' liquid diet as guru Michael Mosley appears on show

ITV This Morning fans greeted the idea of liquid diets (March 10) with horror after Michael Mosley appeared on the programme to discuss the controversial weight loss technique. The doctor was speaking about the diets after reports emerged that cricketer Shane Warne had been on a liquid diet before he had a fatal heart attack on March 4.

Dr Mosley who sells dietary plans and supplements and has written books on the subject explained that he's a fan of liquid diet replacements, but 'not for every meal'. He claimed that he was able to reverse his type two diabetes ten years ago by going on a liquid diet, losing 10kg and being able to keep it off.

Dr Mosley said: "I am a fan of meal replacement shakes but probably not for every meal. If you're going on simply a meal replacement diet you really ought to speak to your doctor, particularly if you're on any form of medication."

"They can be really helpful. But what you're looking for is long-term, sustainable weight loss. And that can be achieved, it really can be."

"I lost ten kilos ten years ago to reverse my diabetes. I'm the same weight now."

The TV doctor also addressed the 'set point theory', which suggests that when you lose weight, your body is always fighting to get back to the weight you were before. This means that it can be harder to keep weight off when you've lost it.

He said: "It's been around for a long time. There isn't a lot of evidence for it, is what I would say. If it was true, then nobody would ever lose weight."

Not everyone was impressed that the TV doctor was discussing the safety of liquid diets, with many viewers suggesting that there are other ways to lose weight. Fans of This Morning took to Twitter to express their views.

Emma questioned the segment, adding: "Why is this guy promoting meal replacement shakes and extremely low calorie diets? This is not healthy. How about promoting more fruit and veg and exercise. It’s not rocket science"

Craig said: "I like Dr Mosley but sick to death of him peddling fast diets.. back over to Crimewatch Live it is!"

Stephanie agreed, adding "How on earth anyone can do a liquid only diet is beyond me. I'm ready to pass out if I haven't eaten after a couple of hours #ThisMorning"

Jackie said: "Mosley stop peddling your ridiculous diets and your ridiculous show #ThisMorning"

Lesley tweeted: "#ThisMorning wish they would stop giving airtime to Michael Moseley peddling his own agenda"

However some viewers were left inspired by the piece on the ITV show, calling it 'insightful'

Bridget tweeted: "#ThisMorning insightful interview with the so well informed @DrMichaelMosley"

This Morning airs on ITV every weekday from 10am.
