ITV This Morning viewers slam 'callous' Bev Turner in heated cost of living debate

Bev Turner has angered fans of ITV's This Morning.

Hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield welcomed the guest onto the daytime talk show to discuss the latest headlines across the UK. A huge topic on everyone's lips at the minute is the cost of living crisis - with many families having to choose between eating and keeping warm.

Holly explained a particularly sad story currently in the news. Some parents are "living in McDonald's " to try and escape the rapidly rising prices of energy bills at home.

She said: "It is desperate times and then you hear stories like this and it's one of saddest stories I've ever heard... Parents who are living in McDonald's with their kids because of soaring costs, they buy as little food as they can justify. People have even seen families brushing their teeth in these restaurants and this is the reality of the situation we face."

But Bev didn't think it was much of a problem. She said: "I don't think there are that many people doing that, I think we have to keep it in perspective to some extent."

Holly snapped back: "But still someone is. This story hasn't just been made up, this is the reality for someone and if it's one person, that's terrible."

Bev replied: "It is terrible but we also have - and I'm going to sound incredibly callous now - but we also have a huge employment shortage, we have more availability for jobs at the moment than we have ever had before."

Holly asked who was supposed to pay for childcare, and Bev said: "If the children are not at school age Holly, I totally agree, that's really difficult. But if your children are at school all day, I'm sorry I just don't think..."

Phil agreed that Bev did sound callous as he said: "But it does sound rather callous, because the mere fact of what Holly said they're in McDonald's with their kids, so those kids are maybe not at school age so what else do you do?" He added: "I mean essentially you're just saying, 'go out and get a job'."

Fans on Twitter were horrified with Bev's comments, and said she doesn't live in the real world. Lisa said: "Bev you don’t live in the real world. The benefit system is a complete joke and going to the job centre?? Most of them have closed down you stupid woman."

Anthony said: "Bev Turner just made herself look stupid didn't she. Just go out and get a job eh? Even if you have small children that will need minding which will consequently take half of the money you earn. Why is she on TV? Oh yes, because SHE is probably earning a fortune."

Danny said: "I feel like Bev's throwing shade at all of us #ThisMorning." Meanwhile, Molls said: "Shut it Bev. You have no idea! You don’t even have to worry about money! Get her off #thismorning."
