ITV This Morning viewers perplexed by Jubilee-winning trifle segment

A segment during the latest episode of This Morning was left being compared by viewers to 'inviting Elton John on the show and letting an impersonator sing'. Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary were back in their usual spot on Friday (May 13).

The pair were back at the helm of the ITV daytime show as they chatted Eurovision, DIY SOS with Nick Knowles, and superstitions with The Speakmans thanks to it being Friday the 13th.

However, many viewers were a bit perplexed over one particular part of the show. The hosting duo were joined in the studio by Jemma Melvin whose creation, a lemon and Swiss roll amaretti trifle, has beat off competition from thousands of others to be the official pudding for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Jemma, a copywriter from Merseyside, created the dessert, inspired by the lemon posset served at the Queen's wedding to Prince Philip and the 31-year-old's own grandparents, and appeared in a special BBC programme called The Jubilee Pudding: 70 years in the Baking which was looking for the perfect pud to help mark the monarch's incredible achievement.

The judges on the programme included Dame Mary Berry and Monica Galetti and they came to a unanimous decision with the Duchess of Cornwall announcing the winner. However, as she appeared on This Morning alongside her dessert to chat about her win, it was left to Jane Dunn, who was one of the competition’s judges, to actually show viewers exactly how it was made - despite never having made it before.

@MrXathon asked: "Why is she not allowed to show us making her own creation?? Odd.. #ThisMorning." @dd_espeleta #thismorning Really confused why the woman who won isnt making it? It is like inviting Elton John to sit and you make an impersonator singing his song for him."

@TonyGre97915994 commented: "#ThisMorning Why was Jemma not making the trifle? She won the competition after all. Strange....." @TanishaBourne91 Why do they have somebody else making her trifle when she's sat right there. #thismorning."

Before Jemma spoke to Alison and Dermot a clip of her winning moment was aired. As the cameras returned to the studio and the hosts turned to their guest for her thoughts, Jemma said: "Is that even real? It doesn't feel real. It's so weird."

She explained how 5,000 entered the competition which was cut down to 50 before five people ended up in the final. Jemma's trifle, consisting of lemon curd Swiss roll on the bottom, St Clement’s jelly, lemon custard, amaretti biscuits, mandarin coulis, fresh whipped cream, candied peel, chocolate shards and crushed amaretti biscuits, saw off competition from other creations which included a passionfruit and thyme frangipane tart, a Jubilee Bundt cake featuring home-made Dubonnet jam, a rose falooda cake and a "four nations" pudding featuring ingredients from around the country.
