This Morning viewers were left a little baffled as they claimed one of the show's guests appeared 'angry' at them. Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were back at the helm of the ITV daytime show on Tuesday (February 28) with another jam-packed show full of the usual segments, guests, and famous faces.
And among those appearing on the second show of the week was Alice Beer who was live in the studio to try and help viewers with the ongoing vegetable shortages hitting shops in the UK.
She was on hand to offer some tips on how to make our fruit and vegetables last longer - if you're able to get hold of them. "We shouldn’t even be looking at a tomato until June should we really,” Alice claimed during the segment after an initial shortage of tomatoes in UK supermarkets has since widened to other fruit and vegetables due to a combination of bad weather and transport problems in Africa and Europe.
"We shouldn’t be looking at these things [veg] that are out of season. But we like them out of season, we like them all year round, so the supermarkets keep the shelves full of them," the consumer expert added before seemingly sharing her gripe with those who eat certain items of veg out of season.
"We’re not going to get scurvy and all keel over in the streets if we don’t have a pepper or a tomato or a cucumber for a couple of weeks,” she said. "Yeah, so slightly, get over yourself. But perhaps, in a way, we need to go back to the mentality, the post-war mentality."
Alice then went on to say that we waste a “hell of a lot” of food every year, saying: "It’s ludicrous," as she shared her tips such as where to keep potatoes - which of course triggered a debate.
"So there are a lot of things you can't get hold of - but when you do, you want to store them well," Alice said. "We've had a massive hoo ha this week because I've been on the programme and said you mustn't store your potatoes in the fridge because the Food Standards Agency says not to," Alice began to explain as she revealed why she advised people not to keep their potatoes in the fridge.
"The science behind is that the starch would turn to sugars, those sugars have been found to release, on cooking, cancers which when fed to animals, they cause cancers. Ergo it might well happen in humans. They've gone back on that advice now and said not only is it perfectly safe to keep them in the fridge, they're going to last longer."
Phillip, 60, agreed, saying: "I keep my potatoes in the fridge and they last forever," before joking that he says 'hello' to them every morning. But some This Morning viewers were too distracted by Alice's seemingly angry appearance on the programme. @TellyVsPodcasts tweeted: "Why is Beer so angry at us?? Fruit & veg go off so quickly in more recent years- it’s not our fault. #ThisMorning."
@clareh77 complained: "#ThisMorning for Alice to say get over yourself when cucumbers etc r short ! I have a son with autism & is funny with food & eats allot of these items that r short .. so I won’t get over myself ! Rude." @Soodamoo added: "#ThisMorning Even when tomatoes are in season here my local Sainsburys still have imports so it's pointless Alice Beer getting sniffy about eating things in season really."
