ITV This Morning viewers claim Penny Mordaunt 'horrified' by Alison Hammond's Coronation comparison

This Morning viewers have claimed that Penny Mordaunt appeared 'horrified' when she was given an unexpected comparison by Alison Hammond. The Tory MP appeared on This Morning on Friday (May 12) after she appeared to steal all the attention at the King's Coronation last weekend.

During the historic ceremony in Westminster Abbey on Saturday (May 6), which saw both King Charles III and Queen Camilla crowned, Ms Mordaunt was seen carrying the 17th Century Sword of State and Jewelled Sword of Offering during the ceremony. She gave an impressive performance during the Coronation in her role as Lord President of the Council, carrying the swords for more than an hour.

It was the first time the Jewelled Sword of Offering was presented to the King by a woman. She received countless praise on social media and was even turned into various memes, with some comparing her outfit to the Poundland logo.

Speaking out on her moment at the Coronation earlier this week, Ms Mordaunt said she made sure she was "in good nick" and took a "couple of painkillers " before the ceremony to make sure she'd be alright during the two-hour ceremony. She added that her navy training in Portsmouth helped her to stand for long periods as she “wriggled her toes” to keep her circulation going.

During the programme, Ms Mordaunt was asked about the design of her outfit, a custom-made teal outfit with a matching cape and headband with gold feather embroidery, which also caught the attention of those watching.

"Well, what my predecessor would have worn, and he'd have been a fella, he would have been wearing the Court Dress of the Privy Council which I didn't think was appropriate for me to wear in what was a modern Coronation," Ms Mordaunt told Alison and co-host Dermot O'Leary on the ITV daytime show.

'So the bling you saw on the dress was actually the motif of the Privy Council. And so we took that and put it on the dress.

She continued: 'I had a lot of help, lots of good advice, and even people who weren't directly involved with making the dress and doing the embroidery, the people over at the Privy Council office who got out all the old uniforms and helped me get some ideas together.'

Ms Mordaunt was also asked about the various memes on social media about her role, including the one comparing her outfit to the Poundland logo. She told This Morning: "This is what I love about the great British public. We were waiting for the kebab, the lightsaber, all of that - they did not disappoint. There's been some absolute classics."

But she didn't appear to respond when Alison suggested she looked like one of the character's from the TV series The Handmaid's Tale, before a side-by-side picture appeared on screen. @Sian_humphreys tweeted: "Not surprised Penny looked horrified being compared to a wife from handmaids tale #thismorning."

@frazerpp posted: "@AlisonHammond to @PennyMordaunt - YOU LOOKED LIKE THE WIFE IN #handmaidstale - Penny blinks a lot. #CoronationDay #ThisMorning." @SheetalParmar said: "Oh dear... #ThisMorning Alison comparing Penny Mordaunt's coronation outfit to the commander's wives in The Handmaid's Tale like it's a compliment."

Speaking about the day itself, Ms Mordaunt added: "I was one of millions, I obviously got a lot of attention, but there were so many people doing amazing, amazing work behind the scenes - it was just an amazing event."
