ITV This Morning's Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield 'booed' as they picked up NTA

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield reportedly faced a disgruntled crowd after This Morning picked up its latest National Television Award. The ITV daytime show won an award during the showbiz ceremony held at London’s OVO Wembley Arena on Thursday evening (October 13).

The programme and its stars, including Holly, Phillip, Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, saw off competition from Loose Women, The Chase and The Repair Shop to take home the gong in the Daytime category for a fifth year in a row.

As This Morning was announced as the winner for the Daytime category, a stunned Phillip put his head in his hands and appeared to hold back tears. Holly looked equally as surprised and pleased as she immediately hug her co-star and off-screen 'bestie'. Holly, 41, then rushed off to embrace Alison Hammond, who had not long missed out on a solo award for TV Presenter.

But while their fellow TV stars applauded it has been reported that the crowd around them audibly booed - and it was picked up by viewers watching the glitzy event live on ITV. Scott Bryan, a TV critic and broadcaster, tweeted: "A source at the ceremony says that there were some boos in the room when This Morning won an #NTAs, but boos stopped during the speech."

Another commented: "95% sure #ITV just drowned out the audible boos This Morning received with a false cheering track, which has to be the most tragic thing I've witnessed. #NTA #NTAAwards." A third added: "Did I just hear boos for Holly and Phil? Well done to This Morning for the win though #NTA".

Collecting the award in front of the live audience and live on ITV, Phillip, 60, said: "Don’t think we ever get complacent and please don’t think we ever take this for granted. This means so much to us every year, especially this year. We have the most amazing team. I have the best friend, we have the best boss."

Holly, 41, added: "Thank you so much, this award means everything because it is voted by you, and I think This Morning has a very special relationship with you. You make our show for us, you really do."

Fellow presenter Alison, 47, said she was “grateful” for this award, but that she felt she should have won in the TV presenter category instead of Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly. She said: “I ain’t going to lie but we all know I should have won one of these as well. "Bradley Walsh, Graham Norton and the legends that are Ant and Dec are amazing, but let’s be honest, I should have won one but This Morning won one anyways.”

Ant and Dec continued to dominate the award show as they won the TV presenter award for the 21st consecutive time. The presenting duo were unable to collect the prize in person as they had both recently tested positive for Covid, with Stephen Mulhern picking it up on their behalf. Meanwhile, the 2021 cast of I'm A Celerity, led by Danny Miller, collected the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award on behalf of the ITV reality show.
