ITV This Morning's Dermot O'Leary issues 'difficult' response to Phillip Schofield apology

Dermot O'Leary said it was difficult as he discussed Phillip Schofield's ITV exit.

Mr Schofield stepped away from the channel after he admitted to having an affair with a colleague. The 61-year-old conducted his first TV interview with the BBC's Amol Rajan and issued an apology.

He said: "I would say to everyone, to my family, my friends, my work colleagues, the public, to ITV, my management company, to everyone that I lied to, that I am desperately sorry." Dermot hosted today's This Morning as they discussed the interview.

He said: "It's the top story this morning and we don't want to to shy away from it." Dermot shared why it was tough to address as he added: "It's difficult to cover this story as a friend and a colleague."

The 50-year-old co-hosted today's show alongside Alison Hammond, who broke down in tears after footage was shown from the interview. She said: "I find it really painful. I loved Phillip Schofield and I still love Phillip Schofield. However, what he's done is wrong. He's admitted it. He's said sorry. As a family. we're all really struggling to process everything.

"I never know what to say, but I always remember what my mum said. My mum always said use your bible as your sat nav. The bible always said, 'he without sin cast the first stone'. I don't know what to say because I'm in conflict."

Dermot stepped in to support his co-host as she was overwhelmed with emotion. ITV has launched an external review into Mr Schofield's "consensual on-off relationship", which will be led by chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall.

Gyles Brandreth joined the hosts for today's edition of This Morning view and he urged people to "be kind" as the review process took place.

In the interview with the BBC, Mr Schofield admitted he felt broken and said words from his daughters saved his life. He added: "My girls saved my life. They said last week, they haven't left me for a moment, they have been by my side every moment because they're scared to let me out of their sight. What is that like for daughters to have to go through something like that?

"They said to me 'don't you dare do this on our watch, we're supposed to be looking after you'. If my girls hadn't been there then I wouldn't be here because I don't see a future. How much do you want a man to take?"
