ITV viewers were left in tears on Thursday (February 20) after a distressing segment aired on This Morning, spotlighting the grim realities faced by care home residents. In a segment that will long be remembered, presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary discussed the ongoing care home crisis with Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, while also sharing harrowing first-hand accounts from those directly affected.
During the program, the show featured Clare Miller, who bravely recounted her mother Ann King’s traumatic experience at Reigate Grange care home in 2022. Clare, seated on the couch alongside the hosts, detailed how her mother, a dementia patient, was subjected to abuse by care staff, according to the Express.
A covertly installed camera in Ann King’s room had captured shocking footage of alleged staff misconduct at the Surrey facility. Before introducing the upsetting video, Alison and Dermot took a moment to warn viewers that what they were about to see was not filmed in the studio and contained distressing images.
The footage, which quickly drew an emotional response from the audience, allegedly showed care workers handling Ann roughly as she cried out in distress. The video also captured moments of taunting, mockery, and swearing directed at Ann during her vulnerable state of confusion and fear.
Clare later recounted the chilling moment she first suspected grave issues: “The first moment we realized there was something really not right was when my brother found a male carer on the floor of her room, and my mum was absolutely terrified”, reports Wales Online.
Clare’s heart-wrenching revelations have reignited public debate over the quality of care provided in some facilities. Despite previous complaints to authorities and a safeguarding investigation into Reigate Grange, Clare expressed deep frustration over the care home’s lack of transparency, accusing them of evasion, denial, and dishonesty. The emotional toll of witnessing such mistreatment was evident when she confessed, “It broke my heart, I will never forget it.”
Social media erupted with viewer reactions following the broadcast. One viewer commented, “Just awful.” Another added, “That is horrific,” while a third expressed fury by stating, “The clip of carers abusing that poor lady whilst they’re paid to CARE for her makes me rage.” A fourth individual summed up the shared shock: “That is so f distressing to watch, horrific.”
In response to the disturbing revelations, Surrey police have initiated an investigation. Signature Senior Lifestyle, which operates Reigate Grange, has taken decisive action—one caregiver has been dismissed and two others have stepped down following the allegations.
In an official statement, a representative from Signature said, “The behavior of the individuals concerned was reprehensible and fell far short of the standards of care we provide our residents every day. We would like to again apologise to Mrs King and her family, and reassure our community that these actions were committed by rogue individuals.” The care home has also waived £9,800 in unpaid fees and proposed £5,000 as compensation in full and final settlement of all claims, though Ann King’s family has yet to accept this offer.
