ITV This Morning: Phillip Schofield's TV controversy and why he won't divorce his wife after coming out as gay

British household name and popular TV presenter Phillip Schofield is celebrating 40 years of being on the TV, which has seen some huge career milestones and dramatic twists.

The star is best known for presenting This Morning and Dancing on Ice alongside his friend and presenting partner Holly Willoughby.

Throughout his career Phillip has been the first continuity presenter for Children's BBC, been the youngest employee at BBC Radio, and come into trouble over the north Wales child abuse scandal.

Phillip also came out as gay in 2020 to both his wife Stephanie of 27 years and his daughters and then to the public via an Instagram post and subsequent interview on This Morning.

Since then, Phillip has remained married to Stephanie and explained on the Chris Evans How To Wow podcast, as reported by Hello! that he is not thinking about getting a divorce.

He said: "I'm still married to Steph. There is a great deal of talk of divorce – we have not discussed that at all.

"With divorce... that has not been discussed. We are picking our way through and however that works and it’s a work in progress. I am a work in progress. Steph is a work in progress."

Phillip has now moved out of the family home in Oxfordshire, after spending the first lockdown in 2020 with them, and now lives in a £2 million pad in Chiswick, London as reported by The Mirror.

Earlier this month, the roof of his new pad started leaking and he credits having tested positive for coronavirus and isolating at home as a blessing in disguise as he was able to spot the leak before it flooded the whole house.

Currently it is believed that Phillip is single and not in a new relationship, and when he came out on This Morning, he said he was not thinking about a new partner:

"I'm not thinking there, I'm doing each day at a time now. This has always been a slow process and there's no fast process after this."

Phillip shot to fame when he became the first continuity presenter for Children's BBC, now known as CBBC, in 1985.

Before this he was the bookings clerk and tea boy for BBC Radio, where he was the youngest employee.

In the early 1990s Phillip moved to adult TV with his own shows on ITV, Schofield's Quest, and Schofield's TV Gold.

From there he presented National Lottery Winning Lines on BBC One and in 2006 he signed an exclusive two-year contract with ITV.

From 2002 to 2009 he joined and presented This Morning with Fern Britton until she was replaced by Holly Willoughby in 2009 and Phillip continues to present the show with Holly.

From 2006 to 2011 Phillip presented Dancing on Ice with Holly and then Christine Bleakly from 2012 to 2014. In 2018, when Dancing on Ice was re-launched on ITV, Phillip resumed presenting the show with Holly.

He has also presented game shows including The Cube and All Star Mr & Mrs and has performed on stage during his career.

In 2012 Phillip came into controversy during an interview with former Prime Minister David Cameron about the north Wales child abuse scandal on This Morning.

Phillip gave Cameron a list of names of people who had been named as paedophiles in the scandal and the names included former senior Conservative party politicians.

The list was made visible during the show and Phillip was widely criticised for this and there was an Ofcom investigation.

Phillip apologised and blamed a misjudged camera angle and he and ITV paid £125,000 compensation to settle a libel suit from one of the politicians falsely accused, Lord McAlpine.

Currently Phillip presents This Morning, Dancing on Ice, and The Cube all on ITV.
